On July 28, U.S. Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) and 16 other members of Congress introduced the Pregnant and Parenting Students Access to Education Act (H.R. 5894). This is an extraordinary opportunity for Massachusetts to secure federal funding that is targeted at supporting pregnant and parenting teens' access to and success in education. The introduction of this legislation is a strong and heartening signal that our federal policymakers understand the importance and merit of supporting a population of youth too often overlooked and under-valued.

President Obama approved $655 million in federal funding for Massachusetts on Tuesday, August 10. Governor Patrick can allocate $200 million of these dollars to education without the legislature’s approval.

Although YPP is administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance, it is an education program that experienced devastating cuts in the fiscal year 2011 budget. If funding is not restored to this program, over 300 ready and willing pregnant and parenting teens will not go back to school this year.
