ACLU Foundation of Massachusetts

POSITION AVAILABLE

(part-time and short-term)

SOCIAL WORK OR SOCIAL SCIENCES GRADUATE OR GRAD STUDENT

FOR ACLU OF MASSACHUSETTS RESEARCH PROJECT ON

PREGNANT AND PARENTING TEENS IN SCHOOL

(July 5, 2011)

The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts is seeking a part-time contract researcher to help review the literature, studies and available data concerning how public schools in Massachusetts deal with pregnant and parenting teenagers. The researcher will also reach out to partner organizations, social service providers, and schools and interview teens to further investigate the challenges these teens face in staying in school and how the policies of schools and government agencies affect this population. The project will include surveying relevant data and conducting qualitative research as a basis for selecting several cities or towns for a closer examination of their policies and practices related to pregnant and parenting students.

The person selected for this position should be able to evaluate social science research, analyze data, and interview representatives of government, social service and nonprofit agencies that work with teen pregnancy and parenting issues. An ability to relate to and talk with teenagers is also needed. Excellent writing ability is required in order to report on the findings. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus. Some travel may be required within the state. We anticipate that the position will require several hours per week initially and then up to fifteen hours for some weeks when travel and in-depth interviews take place as needed. The work will commence in July and end with a report by November, 2011.

The candidate would ideally be a graduate or candidate for a degree in social work or social sciences with experience working with teenagers and a commitment to reproductive health, equality and social justice. Applicants with other backgrounds will be considered. This position will be paid on an hourly basis, with the rate to be negotiated based on experience and education. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and several references by email to swunsch@aclum.org.
